If the English Wikipedia is really closed, it will give great pressure to the U.S. Government. Because the non-profit site Wikipedia is the sixth most frequent sites visited in the world, with the number of readers reached 365 million people.
"Do not underestimate our strength. In my opinion, the government was afraid that if the public did revolt. And we (Wikipedia) will launch it," writes Wales on his personal blog on Wednesday (12/14/2011). Because, according to Wales, it takes a general uprising to stop it.
Wales were invited Wikipedians, the term for the contributors at Wikipedia, to give their views on such measures in a poll.
Wikipedians have previously used similar tactics to political pressure, but in a smaller scale. They closed the Italian Wikipedia as one of protest against the local police rule prohibiting the publication of the results of the police tape. For three days in October, visitors were greeted by the Italian-language Wikipedia statement criticizing the regulations, and Simple request that the regulations were immediately removed.
